Description

This homemade apple pie features a flaky buttery crust and sweet cinnamon-spiced apples. Perfect for gatherings or a comforting dessert at home, it’s an easy and delightful treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups Flour
  • 1/2 tbsp Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 cup Butter, Cold & Diced
  • 7 tbsp Cold Water
  • 1 Egg + 1 tbsp Water for Egg Wash
  • 7 cups Apples (Peeled, Cored & Thinly Sliced)
  • 1 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup Butter
  • 3 tbsp Flour
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • 1 cup Sugar

Instructions

  1. In a food processor, combine flour, sugar, and salt for the crust.
  2. Add cold, diced butter to the mix, pulsing until coarse crumbs form. Gradually add cold water until moist clumps form. Turn the dough onto parchment paper, divide into two balls, flatten into discs, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  3. Preheat the oven to 425°F. Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them thinly, enough to fill 7 cups. Toss the apples with cinnamon in a bowl.
  4. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and simmer for 1 minute. Add water and sugar, bringing it to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for another 3 minutes, whisking continuously, then remove from heat.
  5. Combine the sauce with the coated apple slices in a large bowl.
  6. Flour the counter and roll out the bottom pie crust into a 12" circle. Transfer it carefully to a 9" pie plate.
  7. Layer the apple mixture evenly in the crust, avoiding filling on the edges.
  8. Roll out the second crust to an 11" round, cutting it into 10 strips. Arrange these in a woven pattern over the pie filling, trimming excess edges as needed. Pinch the edges to seal.
  9. Prepare the egg wash by beating the egg and water together and brush it over the crust.
  10. Bake the pie for 15 minutes at 425°F with the edges covered. Then, lower the temperature to 350°F, remove the cover, and bake for an additional 40-45 minutes, checking every 10-15 minutes for doneness.

Notes

Ensure the butter is very cold to achieve a flaky crust.
You can use a mix of sweet and tart apples for the best flavor.
For a sweeter pie, adjust the sugar based on your taste.
