Description

These Cut-Out Chocolate Sugar Cookies boast an irresistible cocoa flavor. With simple prep and key ingredients like butter and sugar, they are a delightful treat for any occasion, especially when decorated with icing or sprinkles!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 and 1/2 cups (188g) all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup (62g) unsweetened natural or dutch process cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup (12 Tbsp; 170g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Royal Icing, Glaze Icing, or Cookie Buttercream
  • Assorted sprinkles

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar on high speed until creamy, about 2 minutes. Add the egg and vanilla, beating until combined.
  3. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix on low speed until just combined. If the dough is too soft, add 1 more tablespoon of flour.
  4. Divide the dough into two equal parts. Roll each part on parchment or silicone mats to a 1/4-inch thickness, dusting with cocoa powder or flour as needed.
  5. Put the rolled doughs together with parchment in between, cover, and refrigerate for 1-2 hours or up to 2 days.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and line baking sheets with parchment. Cut out shapes from the chilled dough using cookie cutters and arrange on baking sheets.
  7. Bake cookies for 11-12 minutes until edges are set, then allow to cool for 5 minutes before transferring to a rack to cool completely.
  8. Decorate cooled cookies with icing or sprinkles as desired and enjoy!

Notes

Make sure the butter is softened to room temperature for the best texture.
If your dough gets too warm while rolling, refrigerate it for a few minutes to make it easier to cut shapes.
These cookies can be stored for up to 5 days at room temperature in a tight container.
