Ingredients
Scale
- 3 lb (1400g) apples (fuji, gala, honeycrisp, red delicious or similar)
- ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar
- ½ cup (100g) packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Slice and core the apples into small chunks. Peeling is optional.
- In a 7qt slow cooker, layer the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon; toss to combine.
- Cover the cooker and set to high. Cook for 3-5 hours, stirring after the first 2 hours, until apples are translucent, about 4 hours.
- Blend the cooked apples and their liquid into a smooth sauce using a hand blender or a countertop blender, taking care with hot liquid.
- Return the blended apple mixture to the slow cooker and cook on high with the lid slightly ajar for an additional 30 minutes to 1 hour, until the desired thickness is reached.
- Stir in salt and vanilla, allowing mixture to cool before transferring to jars or containers for storage.
Notes
If you prefer a smoother texture, blend longer when mixing apples.
Apple butter can be used in various recipes, not just as a spread.
Refrigerated apple butter lasts about 2 weeks without canning.
