- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon almond extract, optional
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 cups (248g) all purpose flour
- ½ cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 3 cups (339g) powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1–3 tablespoons (5-15ml) milk or heavy whipping cream
- Sprinkles and/or food coloring, if desired
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a 9×13-inch pan with foil, then spray with nonstick cooking spray.
- In a stand mixer, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar. Beat in the egg and both extracts, mixing well.
- Incorporate baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt into the mixture, followed by slowly mixing in the flour until combined.
- Press the dough evenly into the prepared pan.
- Bake in the oven for 14-19 minutes until the edges are just golden, and the center appears slightly underdone. Allow to cool completely before frosting.
- To prepare the frosting, beat softened butter until creamy. Mix in salt and gradually add powdered sugar until crumbly.
- Add vanilla and 1 tablespoon of milk or cream, mixing until smooth. Adjust consistency with more milk if necessary. Color the frosting as desired.
Notes
Almond extract enhances flavor, but you can skip it if preferred.
Ensure the bars cool completely before adding frosting for the best texture.
Feel free to customize frosting colors with food coloring!
