Description

These apple turnovers with puff pastry are a delightful treat, featuring a sweet apple filling and a flaky pastry crust. Quick to make, they are great for desserts or snacks, ensuring a burst of flavor in every bite!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (2 sheets) puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 3 medium apples (peeled, cored & diced)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 egg + 1 tbsp water
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1–2 tbsp milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Thaw the puff pastry according to the instructions while preparing the apple filling.
  2. Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the diced apples and cook, stirring occasionally, until they soften.
  3. Lower the heat and mix in the brown sugar and cinnamon, continuing to simmer for 3 minutes until the apples are caramelized. Remove from heat to cool.
  4. Dust the counter with flour and roll out the first sheet of the thawed puff pastry into an 11" square. Cut into 4 squares with a pizza cutter.
  5. Place the cooled apple mixture on one half of each square, leaving a 1/2" border on the edges.
  6. Whisk the egg with water to create an egg wash. Brush the edges of the pastry squares lightly with the egg wash to seal.
  7. Fold the pastry over to close the turnovers and crimp the edges with a fork to secure them.
  8. Repeat the process with the second sheet of puff pastry.
  9. Place the turnovers on a parchment-lined baking sheet, ensuring they are spaced at least 1" apart. Cut small slits into the tops of each turnover to allow steam to escape.
  10. Brush the tops of the turnovers with the egg wash and bake in the preheated oven for 20-22 minutes or until golden brown and puffed up.
  11. For the glaze, mix powdered sugar with milk until reaching the desired consistency, then drizzle over the baked turnovers.

Notes

Serve warm for the best flavor.
Feel free to add nuts or raisins to the apple filling for an extra crunch or sweetness.
Make sure to cool the apple filling before adding it to the pastry to prevent soggy turnovers.
