- 1/2 cup (1 stick / 115g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
- 1/4 cup (35g) powdered sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour, spoon and leveled
- your choice of gel or liquid-gel food coloring (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, powdered sugar, salt, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Add in the all-purpose flour and mix until there are no dry streaks remaining.
- Set aside a little less than 1/4 of the dough for the cookie centers, if coloring the petals. Mix several drops of food coloring into the larger portion of dough.
- Pinch off 1 teaspoon-sized pieces of both doughs and roll them into smooth balls. Chill in the fridge for 30 to 60 minutes if the dough is too sticky to handle.
- Arrange dough balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet to form flowers: one uncolored ball in the center surrounded by five colored balls for petals. Gently press them together, leaving about 1 inch of space between each cookie.
- Chill shaped cookies in the freezer for 10 minutes while preheating the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes until lightly golden brown and no longer shiny on top.
- Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
If you want to enhance the colors, add more food coloring to the petals before shaping.
For best results, ensure all ingredients are at room temperature before starting.
